Texas became the 28th state on Dec 29th 1845. Texas is commonly known as the “Lone Star” state and there are several differing opinions as to where the state got this name. Some folks say it is form the “Long Expedition” which had a star as its symbol, others think it is reference to the fact that Texas wanted to become a state and some folks even think it a reference to the fact than it represented Texas as the lone star of Mexico but whatever the reason this name was bestowed on the state it has stuck.
The word Texas comes from the Indian word for friends.

The capital of Texas is Austin and is located on the Colorado River in south-central Texas. Texas is bordered by several other states including New Mexico, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Arkansas.

Texas, originally a territory of Mexico, declared its independence in 1836. For nine years Texas existed as an independent nation (the Texas Republic) until its leaders signed a treaty to become a state within the U.S. in 1845.
